Although cleaning is a chore to most, it is necessary to keep your apartment organized and tidy. Luckily, we have compiled a list of five hacks that will make cleaning quick and easy, and help you work smart, not hard.

5 Ways to Make Cleaning Your Apartment Easier

1. Rubbing Alcohol for Your Mattress

Your mattress will probably outlast most of the furniture, clothes, and personal belongings you own. While it’s great that they are so durable, they also collect massive amounts of dust, dead skin, and other debris. Freshen up your mattress by filling a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol and a drop or two of scented oil (make sure you like the scent and that you don’t use too much oil). You can then spritz the solution on your uncovered mattress and let it dry. The solution will disinfect your mattress of old germs, protect it from new ones, and make it smell great in the process.

2. Grapefruit and Salt for Your Bathtub

You read that right – you can clean your bathtub with a grapefruit. Like lemons, grapefruits have acidic qualities that break down grime and dissolve grease, while also smelling fruity and sweet. Turn the faucet on to dampen the area you want to clean, and sprinkle some kosher salt to act as a scrub. Cut a grapefruit in half to make a hand-held scrubber, squeezing the juice as you go for more “cleaning solution.” When you’re finished, rinse out the sink or tub and toss your grapefruit away for easy clean up. Once you’re done, the unused half makes for a well-deserved snack.

3. Cooking Spray for Soap Scum

Soap scum is inevitable and there are much better ways to spend your time than getting on your hands and knees to scrub every nook and cranny of a filthy surface. Instead of scrubbing and slaving over pesky buildup, spray any soap scum-covered surface with a few mists of cooking spray. Let the solution sit for a few minutes, and wipe it away without any hassle or force. With a few effortless sprays and a wipe, you shower door, tub, and tiles will never have looked better!

4. Butter Knife for Dusty Vents

Dusty vents are unsightly, upset air circulation, and affect your health. Combat the buildup of dust by dampening a clean towel with hot water (avoid too much water because it will cause vents to rust) and wrapping the towel around a butter knife. The wrapped knife makes a great tool to get between the shingles, and will make it easy to clean even the smallest of vents. If you don’t want to use a rag or don’t have an old towel to spare, spray the vents with cleaning solution or pressurized air to loosen the dirt and then use the knife to collect what is left.

5. Bleach and Cotton Balls for Bathroom Tiles

Mildew and mold don’t stand a chance against bleach, which makes it the ideal solution for cleaning dirty bathroom tiles. Get some cotton balls, soak them in bleach, and place them in hard-to-reach or hard-to-clean areas like between tiles and on grout. Let the bleach soak into the areas for about 24 hours, remove the cotton balls, and wash with soapy water to make mold disappear. Be sure to wear gloves and avoid contact with clothes and skin when using bleach, to keep from turning a cleaning do into a cleaning don’t.
